Warts: Separating Fact From Fiction

We’ve busted some of the most common myths about warts!

Myth: If my child touches a frog or toad, he/she will get warts.

Fact: Frogs/Toads do not give humans warts.  Warts are skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV).  The virus can get in the body through small cuts or other openings on the skin.

Myth: All warts are flesh colored.

Fact: Warts can be flesh colored, yellow, tan, black, or gray.  Sometimes you may even see tiny black dots on them.

Myth: Warts can only develop on the hands.

Fact: Warts can develop anywhere on the body, but are most commonly found on the hands, feet (plantar warts), and face.

Myth: Warts are not contagious.

Fact: Warts  are contagious and can be spread by contact with the wart or something that touched the wart.

Myth:  The only way to remove warts is to freeze them.

FactSome warts go away on their own, but for the warts that don’t, there are several removal methods and most can be done in the office.  

Myth: Once a wart is removed, it will never come back.

Fact:  There is always a possibility that a wart will recur, even if the initial treatment is successful.
