Love is in the air! February has long been deemed the month of “love”. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, there’s no better time to talk about what love looks and sounds like to a child. Try the tips below to show your valentine(s) just how much they are loved.
- Use positive and encouraging words when talking to your child. Avoid sarcasm and mockery.
- Whether in the home or out in public, use words like ‘I’m sorry’, ‘please’, and ‘thank you’. Children learn from observing their parent’s behavior.
- Respond promptly to your child’s physical and emotional needs. Be available to listen, even if it’s not the best time for you.
- Use non-violent forms of discipline. Rewards and restrictions should be used to encourage strengths and address concerns.
- Give hugs, cuddle, or show other signs of affection when your child is in a bad mood or upset about something.
- Make plans to spend alone time with your child doing something they enjoy.
- Plan family nights to encourage spending time together–watch movies, play games, or go on a family outing.
- Help your child foster positive relationships with friends and community members. Invite friends and neighbors over for a meal, or find volunteer opportunities that will allow your child to give back.
- Help your child develop self-esteem. Give steady support and help to discover strengths. Be there to celebrate successes and help him/her learn from their mistakes.
- Say ‘I love you’ to your child! It’s important to both show and tell your child that you love them.
