Diaper rash is a common pediatric issue that we frequently get asked about. In warmer months, we tend to get more complaints from parents about diaper rash and how to treat it appropriately.

Diaper rash is a rash of the genitals, buttocks or thigh folds. It often starts as small, red bumps in this region.  If it begins to spread, it can cause skin breakdown and become painful for your child. The most common cause of diaper rash is leaving a wet or soiled diaper on too long. The chemicals formed from urine decomposing in a diaper as well as digestive agents in stool can irritate the skin, causing a rash to develop.

How to Prevent Diaper Rash?

It is important to frequently change your baby’s diaper to keep them clean and dry.

Tips to prevent Diaper Rash:

  1. Changing your baby’s diaper after a bowel movement and wiping with a soft cloth and water is imperative.
  2. Make sure wet diapers are changed quickly as the moisture from urine will begin to attack the skin if a diaper is left on too long.
  3. Use alcohol-free baby wipes and avoid those with harsh chemicals as this will further irritate the skin.
  4. Consider using an oil-based barrier ointment or zinc oxide cream to prevent rashes from attacking skin.
  5. Expose baby’s bottom to air more frequently to keep area from trapping in moisture.

When to call your Pediatrician?

While most diaper rashes will resolve on their own within a few days or from recommendations outlined above, others may need evaluation and treatment by your pediatrician. Call your doctor if your child develops increased redness, ulcerations, blisters, fever or seems inconsolable.
