Heat-related illnesses are a major concern for children, especially during the summer months.  According to the National Weather Service, a heat index at or above 90 degrees poses a significant health risk (HealthyChildren.org,2017).  Protect your child from extreme heat by following the guidelines below:

Find an air-conditioned space: If your home does not have air- conditioning, find a building that does.  Libraries are a great place to retreat.  Check the weather regularly so you can plan in advance for a safe place for you and your family to go when temperatures are high.

Stay hydrated: Encourage your child to drink water regularly throughout the day.  Make sure it is readily available, even before they ask for it.

Dress lightly:  Dress your child in light-colored and lightweight clothing.  Limit clothing to one layer of absorbent material to maximize the evaporation of sweat.

Cool off:  When your child is hot, give them a cool bath or take them swimming to cool down.

Extra rest time:  Heat can make children tired, allow for additional rest time during the day.

If your child experiences any of these symptoms contact your Pediatrician or seek professional medical attention immediately:

  • Feeling faint
  • Headache
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Fever
  • Intense thirst
  • Nausea
  • Not urinating for many hours
  • Vomiting
  • Skin numbness or tingling
  • Muscle aches and spasms
