Constipation is an extremely common concern and diagnosis we see and treat on a daily basis. We frequently reassure parents of young infants that it can be normal for their babies to strain or seem uncomfortable while pooping, and can be normal to skip days between pooping as long as their poop is soft (toddlers and older children should generally have daily bowel movements). More often, we are being presented with a history of abdominal pain, day time and/or night time wetting, urinary tract infections, encopresis (poop accidents), and it never ceases to amaze us how frequently the root cause is constipation. Here is a link to an article I like that discusses constipation, including causes and treatment, and also focuses on the safety of Miralax, the medication we prescribe most commonly to treat it.
