Swimming Safety

Swimming is one of the most popular pastimes in the summer, and it’s a great way to cool off when the temperatures rise.  Keep these swimming safety tips in mind when you have your child at the pool this summer.

  1. Supervision: Never leave children alone in or near the pool; even for a moment.  Close supervision is the best way to prevent drowning.
  2. Swimming Aids: Avoid portable flotation devices such as “floaties”.  They aren’t a substitute for life jackets and can give children and parents a false sense of security.
  3. Fences:  Make sure there is a fence that surrounds all four sides of the pool.  Make sure pool gates open out from the pool and self-close/self-latch at a height children can’t reach.
  4. Entrapment:  Suction from pool drains can trap a swimmer underwater.  Do an inspection to ensure all drains are covered and are securely fit.
  5. Lifeguard:  If you’re at a public pool, make sure a lifeguard is on duty and that safety equipment is readily available.
  6. Healthy Water:  Regularly check that the water’s PH and chlorine levels are correct.  The pool manager should be able to provide you with this information or check their website online.
