Healthy Sleep Habits

Sleep is an essential part of life.  Creating healthy sleep habits from birth can positively impact your child’s physical, mental, and social development. 

Sleep Requirements by age during a 24 hour period:

Infants: 4-12 months should get 12-16 hours (including naps)

Toddlers: 1-2 years should get 11-14 hours (including naps)

Preschoolers: 3-5 years should get 10-13 hours (including naps)

Gradeschoolers: 6-12 years should get 9-12 hours

Teens: 13-18 years should get 8-10 hours

Develop healthy sleep habits by:

  • Keeping to a regular daily routine
  • Being active during the day
  • Monitoring screen time
  • Not allowing drinks in bed 
  • Making sufficient sleep a family priority
  • Creating a safe sleep environment
  • Saying ‘No’ to solid foods before 6 months of age
  • Avoiding overscheduling
  • Learning to recognize sleep problems
