Sleep is an essential part of life. Creating healthy sleep habits from birth can positively impact your child’s physical, mental, and social development.
Sleep Requirements by age during a 24 hour period:
Infants: 4-12 months should get 12-16 hours (including naps)
Toddlers: 1-2 years should get 11-14 hours (including naps)
Preschoolers: 3-5 years should get 10-13 hours (including naps)
Gradeschoolers: 6-12 years should get 9-12 hours
Teens: 13-18 years should get 8-10 hours
Develop healthy sleep habits by:
- Keeping to a regular daily routine
- Being active during the day
- Monitoring screen time
- Not allowing drinks in bed
- Making sufficient sleep a family priority
- Creating a safe sleep environment
- Saying ‘No’ to solid foods before 6 months of age
- Avoiding overscheduling
- Learning to recognize sleep problems
